You could have a garage sale or sell it online through Craigslist, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. If the furniture is in good condition, you might be able to get a decent amount of money for it!
Donate it
Another option is to donate the furniture to a local thrift store or charity. This is a great way to get rid of pieces still in good condition but that you don’t want anymore.
Plus, it’s an excellent way to give back to your community!
Recycle it
If the furniture is too damaged to sell or donate, you can always recycle it.
Many cities have programs that allow you to recycle old furnishings. This is a great option if you don’t want to put it in a landfill, and it’s better for the environment than throwing it away!
Refurbish furniture you don’t want
If you’re a little bit handy, you might want to try refurbishing the furniture yourself. This is a great way to give old pieces a new lease on life!
For example, you could paint it a different color, apply new hardware, or change the upholstery.
Be sure to have all of the supplies you need before you start. This might include sandpaper, paint, screws, and nails. Take your time and be careful when refurbishing. It’s easy to make mistakes, but they can be fixed!
Set it on the curb
If you really can’t find anything else to do with the furniture, you can always set it on the curb with a “free” sign. This is probably not the best option, as someone might take it and dump it in a landfill anyway. But if you’re desperate, it’s an option!
Give old furniture to a family member or friend
If you have old furniture that you don’t want, but still in good condition, you could always give it to a family member or friend. This is a great way to get rid of furnishings without throwing them away, and it’s also an excellent way to help out someone you know!
Refinish wood furniture
One of the best ways to give old furniture a new look is to refinish the wood. This can be a bit labor-intensive, but it’s definitely worth it in the end!
Start by removing all of the hardware. This might include screws, nails, or any other type of fastener. If possible, try to keep them in order so you can put them back on later.
Next, sand the entire piece down. Be sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies. Start with coarse sandpaper and work your way up to a finer grit.
Once sanded, it’s time to stain it. Choose a color that matches your decor or go with something completely different! Apply the stain with a brush or rag, making sure to get into all of the crevices.
Finally, seal the piece with a coat of polyurethane. This will help to protect the wood from scratches and water damage.
Put the hardware back on and enjoy your new piece!
Reuse furniture in a different way
If you’re creative, you might be able to come up with some ways to reuse old furniture. For example, you could use an old dresser as a TV stand or turn an old coffee table into a dog bed. There are endless possibilities!
Put new fabric on old couches and chairs
If you have old couches or chairs that are starting to look worn, you can easily give them a new lease on life by putting new fabric on them. This is a great way to save money, and it’s also a great way to add a fresh style to your home!
Trade your old furniture for something else
If you have friends or family members looking to get rid of old furniture, you could always trade your furniture with them. There are also a number of websites and apps that make this process easy.
Start by taking a picture of the furniture you want to trade-in. Be sure to include all of the details, like dimensions, color, and style.
Next, upload the photo to the website or app. You’ll be able to browse through other people’s furniture and find something that you like.
Once you’ve found a trade, all you have to do is arrange a time and place to meet up. Then, simply swap your furniture and enjoy your new piece!

What is your favorite way to get rid of unwanted furniture?
You’d be surprised what a new paint job, or white-washing, can do in revitalizing an old piece of furniture. I still have furniture pieces from when I was in grade school that I have white-washed. Twenty-six year old dressers that still look really good to this day!
That’s awesome! My wife had me whitewash a couple of nightstands years ago and they are still going strong in the guest room.
This is a great idea. Many things get thrown away too often.

I also meant to add that since Covid hit so many people are getting rid of their sofas that it’s increasingly difficult to even give them away. I had to contact a dozen places before they’d take ours.
I did not know that but very good point! We were hoping to get rid of an unwanted couch in an upcoming neighborhood sale. Looks like it might be harder than we thought.
There are so many people who could do with unwanted furniture. Donate. They may be living in your own neighborhood.

This is great advice, thanks for sharing! I agree that there are so many ways to get rid of unwanted furniture without throwing it out. Although, I have put things out by the trash and had neighbors and others come by and take it before. Sometimes this is a great way to get rid of things! Like they always say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! I also love taking something old and making something new out of it, it is so rewarding!
Yes, neighbors and passerbyers are good for taking unwanted furniture at the curb too. You just never know what someone else is looking for.
