10 Things Homeowners Insurance Doesn't Cover

No one ever plans on a disaster, but it’s important to be prepared for the unexpected. That’s why it’s crucial to have homeowners insurance – but even with insurance, some things aren’t covered.

This blog post will discuss ten things that homeowners insurance doesn’t cover. This information is vital to know so you can be prepared in case of an emergency. Read on to learn more!

Find out what homeowners insurance doesn't cover and how to prepare for the unexpected! Click To Tweet

Water Damage

Number one on the list is water damage. This includes damage from floods, leaks, or other water-related disasters. Even if you have insurance, it’s important to know that most policies exclude coverage for these types of events.

Floods particularly are not covered by homeowners insurance, so if you live in an area that’s prone to flooding, you’ll need to purchase a separate policy.

High-Risk Dog Breeds

Another thing homeowners insurance doesn’t cover is damage caused by high-risk dog breeds. If you have a dog that’s considered to be dangerous, your policy may exclude coverage for any damages or injuries they cause.

Some of the most common high-risk dog breeds include pit bulls, Rottweilers, and Dobermans. If you’re not sure your dog is considered high-risk, check with your insurance company.

Damage Caused by Pets

In addition to damage caused by high-risk dogs, homeowners insurance also doesn’t cover damage caused by other pets. This includes things like chewing, scratching, and other types of destruction.

Even if your pet is well-behaved, it’s important to know that homeowners insurance doesn’t cover the damage they may cause.

Home Businesses

If you have a home business, your homeowner’s insurance policy likely doesn’t cover it. This includes things like inventory, equipment, and even customers injured on your property.

To be safe, it’s always best to check with your insurance company to see if your home business is covered.

Natural Disasters

Natural disasters are another thing that homeowners insurance doesn’t cover. This includes events like earthquakes, tornadoes, and wildfires. If you live in an area prone to these types of disasters, you’ll need to purchase a separate policy.

Luxury Items

Homeowner’s insurance also doesn’t cover luxury items. For instance, things like jewelry, art, and other high-value items. If you have any of these types of items, you’ll need to purchase a separate policy to insure them.

Mold

Mold is another thing that homeowners insurance doesn’t cover. This is because it’s considered to be a preventable problem. If you have mold in your home, it’s likely because of a water leak or other issue that you did not address in a timely manner.

To avoid problems with mold, it’s important to keep your home clean and dry. If you find mold, be sure to address the problem right away.

Damage from Pests

Homeowner’s insurance also doesn’t cover damage from pests. For example, this includes things like termites, rodents, and other animals. If you have a problem with pests, it’s important to address them immediately.

There are many ways to prevent pest problems, so be sure to take some time to research the best option for your home.

Stolen Cash

Another thing homeowners insurance doesn’t cover is stolen cash. This includes money that’s stolen from your home and any cash you have on hand. If you keep a lot of cash in your home, it’s important to take steps to protect it.

Some people choose to keep their cash in a safe deposit box at their bank. Others prefer to keep it in a safe at home. Whichever option you choose, be sure to take steps to protect your cash.

Contractor Mishaps

If you hire a contractor to work on your home, homeowners insurance doesn’t cover any mishaps they may cause. This includes damage to your home, injuries to yourself or others, and even property damage.

To be safe, it’s always best to check with your insurance company before hiring a contractor. That way, you’ll know what is and isn’t covered.

Also, make sure the contractor is licensed and bonded for your protection.

Final Thoughts

Understanding what homeowners insurance doesn’t cover ensures you’re adequately protected against the unexpected. Be sure to take some time to review your policy and make sure you have the coverage you need. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask your insurance company for more information. They’ll be happy to help!

Can you name any other things home insurance doesn’t cover?

FLOODS! Most people think their policy covers floods. IT DOESN’T! Get separate flood insurance, a MUST!

One would think a homeowners insurance policy would cover floods but sadly it doesn’t. It’s strange to us that it doesn’t!

It is crazy to think of all of the things that homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover! It definitely pays to find out, especially since you never know what could happen. I think natural disasters are something everything should have covered.

Right? Homeowner’s insurance def should pay for natural disasters, but it doesn’t. It’s probably something most people just assume it covers.
